Safe Science for Kids!

It's never to early to start learning science and teaching your kids these neat little experiments might just be of interest to them. These experiments are safe and fun at the same time and require very little supervision. None of these experiments involve any dangerous activities and use standard house hold objects. These fun little activities require nothing more than typical household and kitchen items. Most of them involve very little preparation time and provide immediate results.

Help your child understand just what exactly density means and how it works by suspending an egg in water. Teach them how a black light works by showing them the chemical reaction of phosphors and making water glow. Create a miniature water vortex or tornado in a bottle and defy gravity by turning water in a glass upside down without getting wet!

Experiment: Suspend an egg in water

  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Tall drinking glass
  • Salt
  • Water

Instructions: Now fill the glass with water about 3/4 full. Add about 1/2 or roughly 6 tablespoons of salt into the water. Be careful not to mix the salt into the water as you don't want to stir it up you just want add it to the water. Now very carefully lower the egg into the water.

The Results: As the egg breaks the surface of the tap water it should sink however salt water (which should be at the bottom) is denser than normal tap water. This means as the egg starts sinking it will reach the dense salt water resulting in an egg suspended in the middle of the glass.

Experiment: Create a glow lamp

  • Highlighter Marker
  • Black light
  • Tonic Water
  • A dark room

Instructions: Carefully break open a highlighter exposing the felt sponge and soak it in water for a few minutes. Now turn your black light on near your water.

The Results: Tonic water and highlighters contain phosphors, black lights emit ultraviolet light which excites these phosphors making them visible and giving them a glowing effect.

Experiment: Water Tornado

  • Water
  • Clear plastic bottle without leaks
  • Glitter
  • Dish soap

Instructions: Add water to the bottle until about 3/4 full. Add a few drops of dish soap and your glitter. Tighten the cap on the bottle so it won't leak, turn it upside down and spin it a circular direction.

The Results: Continue spinning the bottle upside down and eventually you should see a tornado like vortex within your bottle.

Experiment: Defy Gravity

  • Glass of Water
  • Piece of Cardboard

Instructions: Fill the glass of water to the very top. Place the piece of cardboard over the mouth of the glass ensuring that no air bubbles can enter or escape. Now over a sink or outside carefully turn the glass upside down and then gently remove your hand.

The Results: If done correctly the water will remain in the glass and your feet will remain dry.
